A new Street Fighter movie has selected its challenger, I mean, director.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that Kitao Sakurai, known for his work as a writer, director, and executive producer on the surreal comedy series The Eric Andre Show, will helm a new film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment.

Capcom is said to be "deeply involved" with the project, which is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

Details on casting are yet to be revealed, but fans can anticipate seeing beloved Street Fighter characters brought to life on the big screen.

Originally, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer. The selection of Sakurai, with his background in absurdist humor, suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more unconventional and humorous take on the Street Fighter universe. As a fan of the game's more whimsical aspects, I'm thrilled at the prospect of this new direction.
