Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game, while initially receiving positive reviews, has underwhelmed in sales, falling short of Ubisoft's expectations. This underperformance led to a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price.

Adding to the woes, reports indicate Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While precise sales figures remain unavailable, Star Wars Outlaws' European ranking at 47th best-selling game of 2024 further underscores its poor performance. Player feedback points to dissatisfaction with the game's combat and stealth mechanics, issues Ubisoft attempted to address through post-launch updates, but to limited effect.

Several factors contribute to Jedi: Survivor's success over Outlaws. Jedi: Survivor, a sequel to the well-received Fallen Order, launched to critical acclaim in April 2023 and benefited from a later PS4/Xbox One release, reigniting player interest. In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases.

Post-launch content for Outlaws includes "Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming "A Pirate's Fortune," set for Spring 2025 and featuring Hondo Ohnaka. However, these additions haven't been enough to significantly boost sales. The game's underperformance raises concerns about the future of open-world Star Wars games and Ubisoft's overall financial outlook.
