Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

Square Enix has officially pulled the plug on their anticipated mobile spin-off, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Despite excitement around its innovative approach, the project faced multiple delays, including the postponement of its Android closed beta test. Ultimately, Square Enix decided to discontinue Missing-Link and redirect their focus to the eagerly awaited Kingdom Hearts IV.

Missing-Link was poised to explore a previously untold part of the Kingdom Hearts saga, integrating GPS technology with ARPG combat. Players would have wielded the iconic keyblades to fend off the Heartless, the monstrous adversaries threatening the world. The unique selling point of Missing-Link was its use of GPS, which would have allowed players to engage in battles across various global locations virtually. However, the specifics of how this mechanic would work were never fully clarified, and this ambiguity might have contributed to the project's cancellation.

Square Enix's decision to cancel mobile projects has become somewhat of a recurring theme, often attributed to the complexity and niche appeal of their titles. While new mobile releases are well-received in Japan, finding a broader international audience can be challenging. Kingdom Hearts, with its established fanbase, should have been an exception, but it seems that the core concept of Missing-Link proved too difficult to execute effectively. As a result, the company has chosen to concentrate their efforts on the mainline series, particularly Kingdom Hearts IV.
