Sega's Risk-Taking Spirit Evident in Project Century and Virtua Fighter Initiatives
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) credits their ability to tackle multiple large-scale projects simultaneously to Sega's willingness to venture beyond the safety of tried-and-true formulas. Dive deeper to discover what exciting developments await from the creators of the Like a Dragon series!
RGG Studio Has Two More Projects Coming Up
Sega Takes Risks Into New IPs And Ideas
RGG Studio, renowned as Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, is currently developing several monumental projects, including a brand-new IP. Alongside the anticipated next installment of Like a Dragon and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, RGG Studio has ambitiously added two more titles to their roster. Masayoshi Yokoyama, the studio's head and director, attributes these opportunities to Sega's adventurous spirit, emphasizing the Japanese game publisher's openness to risk-taking.
In December, RGG Studio unveiled trailers for two distinct projects within the same week. At The Game Awards 2025, they introduced Project Century, a fresh IP set in Japan during 1915. The following day, Sega's official channel released a trailer for the new Virtua Fighter Project, distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster. Both projects exhibit the studio's ambition and large-scale vision. Sega, with its portfolio of renowned IPs, appears confident in RGG Studio's ability to deliver, showcasing a blend of trust and a bold determination to explore uncharted territories.
"A commendable trait of Sega is their acceptance of the possibility of failure," Yokoyama remarked in an interview with Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. "It’s not just about sticking to what they know will succeed," he added. Reflecting on Sega’s history, Yokoyama noted that after their early experiences with the Virtua Fighter IP, Sega yearned for something more innovative. This led to the conceptual question, "What if we transformed 'VF' into an RPG?"—an idea that eventually birthed the action-adventure series Shenmue.
RGG Studio reassures fans that despite juggling two major projects concurrently, neither will be compromised in quality, particularly the Virtua Fighter series. The IP's creator, Yu Suzuki, has voiced his support for the new project. With Virtua Fighter being one of Sega’s enduring IPs, Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada and their team, are committed to delivering a product that is far from half-hearted.
Yamada expressed their vision, stating, "With the new 'VF,' we aim to craft something innovative that will resonate as 'cool and interesting' with a broad audience. Whether you're a long-time fan of the series or new to it, we invite you to stay tuned for more exciting updates!" Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, encouraging gamers to anticipate both upcoming titles eagerly.
