The PS Portal, Sony’s handheld accessory for the PS5, resembles a DualSense controller extended with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen at its center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The Portal replicates the DualSense’s features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen replacing the touchpad. You can stream games away from home, provided you have a highly stable, high-speed internet connection. Note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device—it requires a PS5 to function.
Update: No PS5 needed for PS Portal gaming anymore. Sony now allows streaming directly from its PlayStation Now cloud service, bypassing the need for a $500 console. Portal users can connect to their PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers, unlocking access to over 120 titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A PlayStation Plus Premium subscription is required, but $18 monthly is far more affordable than $500 upfront plus $70 per game.
Streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi isn’t exclusive to the PS Portal. The PS Remote Play app on mobile devices, including handhelds like the Steam Deck, offers similar functionality. However, setup is more complex, and you’ll miss some DualSense features.

"The PlayStation Portal exceeded my expectations, turning skepticism into delight. It’s a vast improvement over using a phone with an attached controller and performs better than I imagined. I love the flexibility to play my PS5 anywhere with decent Wi-Fi, especially when my family’s using the TV for other gaming. It’s not a standalone device and requires a PS5, but its main limitations are the lack of browser-based Wi-Fi login support and no Bluetooth audio. Despite these, it’s the best PlayStation Remote Play solution available, and with minor tweaks, it could be a must-have for PS5 owners who love handheld gaming or share a TV."
