Sanderson: Wheel of Time Fans Deserved Better Than Cancelation After Best Season, 120,000 Sign Petition for Season 4

The future of *The Wheel of Time* television series appears increasingly uncertain following Amazon Prime Video’s decision to cancel the show after Season 3. Compounding fan concerns, recent reports indicate that the series is not currently being pitched to other streaming platforms. Adding fuel to the fire, Brandon Sanderson—author who completed Robert Jordan's iconic fantasy saga—has publicly expressed his disappointment with how the production handled its creative collaboration.

Last month, it was officially confirmed that Prime Video would not be moving forward with a fourth season of *The Wheel of Time*, despite what sources described as “lengthy deliberations” behind the scenes. While studio executives reportedly appreciated the show, they ultimately concluded that the production costs were unsustainable relative to its performance metrics.

Built upon the foundation of Robert Jordan’s beloved fantasy book series and starring Rosamund Pike in a leading role, the show had faced considerable backlash from literary fans during its first two seasons due to notable deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 marked a turning point, winning back much of the audience and setting up momentum for what many hoped would be the show’s strongest chapter yet.

Unfortunately, the financial burden proved too great for co-producers Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The latter, which also produces the high-budget *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*, reportedly could not find a financially viable path forward. As reported by Deadline:

“...the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV,” sources said.

Brandon Sanderson addressed the cancellation in a candid comment on one of his YouTube videos, revealing that he was kept at arm’s length throughout the process:

“I wasn't really involved. Don't know anything more than what is public. They told me they were renegotiating, and thought it would work out. Then I heard nothing for two months. Then learned this from the news like everyone else.

I do think it's a shame, as while I had my problems with the show, it had a fanbase who deserved better than a cancelation after the best season. I won't miss being largely ignored; they wanted my name on it for legitimacy, but not to involve me in any meaningful way.”

Sanderson’s words echo the frustration felt by many longtime fans, especially those who saw Season 3 as a significant step forward in adapting the depth and nuance of the novels.

In addition to the cancellation, TVLine recently confirmed through well-placed industry sources that there are currently no plans to shop *The Wheel of Time* to other networks or streaming services—a blow to those still holding out hope for a revival. Meanwhile, over 120,000 fans have signed a petition urging studios to “Save *The Wheel of Time*” and finish telling the story in full.

Despite speculation that Apple TV+, known for investing heavily in large-scale sci-fi and fantasy content, might step in, such hopes appear increasingly unlikely given Apple’s already packed development slate.

With no new home on the horizon and mounting evidence pointing toward permanent closure, *The Wheel of Time* adaptation now seems to have spun to a halt—leaving behind an unfinished narrative and a wave of disappointed fans who believed the screen version could one day live up to the legacy of the books.
