The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is a top-tier drive for your gaming PC or PlayStation 5. It easily surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirements for the PS5, boasting read speeds up to 7,250 MB/s and write speeds up to 6,300 MB/s. While not quite as fast as the 990 Pro, it's significantly faster than the standard 990 Evo. The key difference? This is a DRAM-less drive. For PS5 gaming, this makes no difference whatsoever. For PCs, it utilizes HMB (host memory buffer), borrowing a negligible amount of system RAM—gamers won't notice any performance impact.
This SSD doesn't include a pre-installed heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is energy-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This means a heatsink is likely unnecessary, even in a PS5. However, adding one for extra peace of mind wouldn't hurt, though it might add around $7 to the cost.
