The surprise was palpable among fans, as the game had only opened for wishlisting on Steam on April 1 and showcased its first official gameplay teaser on April 2. Although the game was first announced in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex opened signups for alpha testing of a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The game's official reveal as RuneScape: Dragonwilds came on March 31, 2025.

Estimated Official Release Date in Early 2026

Jagex has set sights on an early 2026 release for Dragonwilds. The developers emphasized their commitment to delivering a polished and engaging experience, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure that our players get a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends again and again."

Early Access Roadmap Revealed

Jagex unveiled an exciting roadmap for the early access phase of Dragonwilds, teasing what players can look forward to. A highlight is the introduction of the Fellhollow region, a mystical land caught between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru and influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will be joined by the iconic RuneScape character Death on this journey, with new quests, lore, gear, and music to explore, along with new skills in magic, ranged, and farming.

Additionally, the game will introduce new enemy types like Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, a creative mode, and more. While specific release dates for these updates remain under wraps, Jagex assured players of continuous improvements throughout the early access period.
