Nintendo Switch 2's GameChat feature will mandate phone number verification during setup.

The built-in video calling software comes pre-installed on all Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and is positioned as a flagship feature of the new system.

However, users should note that configuring GameChat requires identity verification through a linked phone number (or the number already associated with your Nintendo Account if previously connected).

Nintendo will send a verification text message to register your GameChat activity with that number - so mind your behavior!

For users under 16, GameChat remains locked until authorized through the Parental Controls app, which requires guardian verification via their own phone number.

Nintendo's official website suggests this authentication applies to all Nintendo Account holders using Switch 2, even on shared devices. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for clarification.

The GameChat interface can be activated mid-gameplay using the new 'C' button on Switch 2 controllers, supporting up to four simultaneous video chats or 24-person audio conferences.

Video calls support external camera peripherals (sold separately) and gameplay streaming - marking Nintendo's first venture into this type of service after traditionally lagging behind competitors in online features.

Recent Digital Foundry analysis revealed GameChat's substantial system resource demands, causing developer concerns about performance impact.

Nintendo provides developers with GameChat simulation tools to test API latency and cache issues without live calls, suggesting potential performance considerations.

As Digital Foundry noted: "We'll monitor how GameChat may affect gameplay performance, as this appears to be a developer concern area." Final confirmation will come with Switch 2's June 5 launch.

GameChat remains complimentary for the first 10 months, transitioning to Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement after March 31, 2026.
