Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Android Devices in 2025

A pair of upcoming updates to Pokemon GO will render the game unplayable on several older mobile devices, starting as early as March 2025. The changes primarily affect 32-bit Android devices, leaving many long-time players needing to upgrade their phones to continue their gameplay.

This decision, announced on January 9th by Niantic, impacts the game's compatibility with older hardware to enhance performance and stability on modern devices. While Pokemon GO celebrated its eighth anniversary in 2024 and maintains a significant player base (over 110 million active players in December 2024), the update will necessitate the end of service for certain 32-bit Android phones.

The first update in March 2025 will affect some Android devices downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy Store. A second update in June 2025 will specifically target 32-bit Android devices obtained via Google Play. Niantic has provided a partial list of affected devices, but assures players that 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will remain compatible.

Players using affected devices are urged to safeguard their login credentials. While they can regain access after upgrading their phones, they will be temporarily locked out until they acquire a compatible device. This includes any purchased Pokecoins.

Despite this disruption, 2025 promises exciting developments for the broader Pokemon franchise. The release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is anticipated, along with rumored projects such as Pokemon Black and White remakes and a potential new entry in the Let's Go series.
