Pocketpair Forced to Patch Palworld Amid Nintendo and Pokémon Lawsuit

Jun 03,25(2 months ago)

If you're a fan of Palworld, the recent updates and legal challenges have been quite the rollercoaster. Developed by Pocketpair, Palworld burst onto the scene in early 2024, breaking sales records across platforms like Steam and Xbox Game Pass. Despite generating massive profits, the developers found themselves in the middle of a significant legal storm with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company over patent infringement allegations.

The heart of the lawsuit revolves around three Japan-based patents related to catching Pokémon in a virtual field. Palworld features a mechanic where players throw a sphere-like object, called a "Pal Sphere," to capture creatures in the wild—a mechanic reminiscent of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. While the game didn’t initially face a copyright infringement suit, the legal challenge took a different path through patent law.

In response to the lawsuit, Pocketpair has been making strategic adjustments to the game to avoid potential bans or injunctions. In November 2024, Patch v0.3.11 removed the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres, replacing it with a static summon mechanism near the player. Other gameplay elements were also altered to comply with the legal demands. Despite the disappointment among fans, the developers explained that these changes were necessary to preserve the overall gameplay experience.

Fast forward to Patch v0.5.5, and players noticed more modifications. Gliding mechanics now require a separate glider item instead of relying solely on Pals. Although Pals still offer passive buffs during gliding, players must now possess a glider in their inventory to glide. These changes reflect further concessions to the ongoing legal battle.

Pocketpair expressed regret over these adjustments but emphasized their necessity to keep Palworld alive and thriving. In a statement to fans, the studio acknowledged the frustration and disappointment but assured supporters that they continue to dispute the validity of the patents in court.

Speaking at GDC, John “Bucky” Buckley, Pocketpair’s communications director, delved into the challenges the team faced, including accusations of using generative AI and copying Pokémon designs. Buckley admitted that the patent lawsuit came as a surprise and wasn’t something the team anticipated. Despite these hurdles, Pocketpair remains dedicated to delivering engaging content to its community.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Palworld continues to evolve, balancing innovation with compliance. For fans, it’s a testament to Pocketpair’s resilience and commitment to the future of the game.
