Speculation surrounding a PlayStation 5 release of Starfield intensified after fans spotted a PlayStation logo on Bethesda's official Creations website, attached to a work-in-progress ship decal. Although quickly removed, the logo fueled rumors of a forthcoming PS5 release for Bethesda's sci-fi title, currently exclusive to PC and Xbox. A Reddit user, u/Dollar99Man, noted the logo's appearance on a single creation, suggesting possible beta testing involvement.

This discovery naturally leads to questions about potential future content updates, perhaps even a new expansion, timed to coincide with a PS5 launch. Recent months have seen relatively little news regarding Starfield, following the release of the less-than-stellar Shattered Space expansion. With Microsoft's anticipated summer showcase, an event that has become an annual occurrence, many believe this could be the ideal platform for any Starfield announcements.

Bethesda itself has hinted at "exciting things" planned for Starfield this year, acknowledging player concerns about a perceived lack of communication and updates. In June 2024, Bethesda reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Starfield, confirming at least one additional story expansion beyond Shattered Space. In an interview with MrMattyPlays on YouTube, Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard expressed the aim to release an annual story expansion "hopefully for a very long time."

Starfield launched in September 2023 as Bethesda's first new IP in years and its first mainline single-player game since Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021. IGN's review scored it a 7/10, stating: "Starfield has a lot of forces working against it, but eventually the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat make its gravitational pull difficult to resist."

In January, Microsoft's Phil Spencer declined to rule out a PS5 release for Starfield. Reports from March 2024 suggested both Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle were under consideration for PS5. Indiana Jones subsequently received confirmation for a PS5 release, slated for Spring 2025, a few months after its PC and Xbox release. Starfield, however, remains unconfirmed for PS5, despite Spencer's suggestive comments.

Several Xbox games are already available on PS5, including Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment. Microsoft already publishes Minecraft on PlayStation and plans to release Doom: The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 on PS5 later this year. Forza Horizon 5 is also confirmed for PS5, and reports suggest a potential release of Halo on PlayStation after years of Xbox exclusivity.

Spencer has attributed Xbox's multiplatform strategy to boosting Microsoft's gaming revenue, a key objective following the significant acquisition of Activision Blizzard. He stated in August 2023: "We run a business…the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery we have to give back to the company…So I look at this, how can we make our games as strong as possible? Our platform continues to grow, on console, on PC, and on cloud. It’s just going to be a strategy that works for us."
