PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run

A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the victor. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's a promising game.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly massive course roster (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC when surveying holes, are easily overlooked.

The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. The right stick control (for controllers) – pull down to wind up, push forward to strike – offers satisfying precision, adjustable from forgiving to challenging. The Perfect Swing option caters to casual players. Lateral movement in the tee box adds strategic depth. The enhanced ball physics also contribute to a more realistic feel. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly helped the initial experience.

MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (known for his "Shooter McGavin" role, though not as that specific character due to licensing) adds a touch of humor. Choices affect stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear impacting performance. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests provides ongoing goals.

The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored in the preview, allows for reasonable character customization, and the inclusion of skill trees is a positive addition. Multiplayer modes, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise fun social interaction, reminiscent of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous options cater to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its overall competence without truly standing out in any single area. This makes it hard to generate overwhelming excitement, but it appears to be a solid, relaxing option for golf enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. A playable demo is currently available.
