The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, a recent IGN interview with the project leads revealed crucial information. The sequel is confirmed as a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline.

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative continuity with the original game. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at Amaterasu's return with a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed the sun goddess's presence in the TGA trailer.

While not surprising to fans, the sequel's development addresses lingering questions about the previous entry, Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged the existing fanbase for Ōkamiden but emphasized that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative, offering a distinct continuation.

Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel, irrespective of Ōkamiden's events. The conclusion depicts Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, leaving ample room for new challenges and adventures.

However, further details remain elusive. The sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. According to Hirabayashi, substantial updates are not expected anytime soon.
