Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Mouse Support and More
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing enhancements to the Switch 2's Joy-Cons. The patent strongly suggests mouse functionality, corroborating speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed a Joy-Con being swiped across a surface.
This patent confirms previous speculation, given Nintendo's previous silence regarding Switch 2 details. The patent describes a sensor detecting reflected light to enable mouse-like operation when a Joy-Con's surface rests on a surface.
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons retain the detachable design of their predecessors, but with added features. A new charging dock accommodates simultaneous charging of up to two Joy-Cons. A magnetic attachment, including a wrist strap, securely connects the Joy-Cons to the console.
The patent also unveils a novel controller design: a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These halves can be combined using a separate attachment to form a single controller.
