Nintendo denies AI in Mario Kart dev, refutes rumors
Nintendo has denied allegations suggesting it utilized AI-generated imagery for billboards in Mario Kart World.
Speculation arose when a Nintendo Treehouse livestream offered a preview of the upcoming racing game. Observant fans noticed peculiarities in some in-game advertisements, including a construction site, a bridge, and an unusually elongated vehicle that appeared artificial.

While pre-release versions often contain temporary placeholder assets, Nintendo explicitly denied using any AI-generated content, stating to Eurogamer: "No AI-generated images were used during the development of Mario Kart World."

The debate around generative AI continues to intensify across creative industries, particularly in game development. Beyond ethical and legal concerns, labor organizations have warned about potential job displacement, with game industry professionals advocating for safeguards against AI implementation.
Last September, Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto emphasized the company's divergent approach to technology trends. While industry leaders like EA's Andrew Wilson have embraced AI as fundamental to operations, Miyamoto articulated Nintendo's distinctive philosophy.
Speaking with The New York Times, Miyamoto explained: "Our goal isn't contrarianism for its own sake, but rather preserving what makes Nintendo unique. When technological trends emerge, like AI, and everyone begins converging on similar solutions, that's precisely when we seek alternative approaches."
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa previously commented in July about balancing technological progress with creative integrity: "Generative AI presents novel creative possibilities, but also intellectual property challenges. With decades of expertise crafting distinctive gaming experiences, we'll continue delivering Nintendo's unique value that transcends pure technology."
The forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 - featuring Mario Kart World as an exclusive launch title - arrives June 5. Pre-orders opened April 24 at $449.99, meeting substantial demand. Detailed purchasing guidance is available through IGN's Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order guide.
