In a statement to Vooks, Nintendo emphasized that physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will contain the full game and its upgrade on a single game card, designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, they also noted that some publishers might opt to release these editions as download codes within physical packaging, without an actual game card.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, priced at $79.99, include titles such as Kirby and The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World, Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. These games enhance the original Switch versions with various upgrades. For instance, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom now feature additional support for the Zelda Notes service within the Nintendo Switch App, providing in-game assistance and achievements on the Switch 2.

Nintendo has also confirmed that some new Nintendo Switch 2 game cards might not include the actual game data but will instead contain a download key. These game-key cards are physical cards that provide a key for downloading the game. They require an internet connection to download the game once the card is inserted into the Switch 2. These game-key card cases will be clearly labeled on the lower front of the box, helping consumers identify what they are buying.

Notable examples of games using game-key cards include Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster, whereas titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not use this system. Additionally, Cyberpunk 2077, which has a significant file size of 64 GB on the Nintendo Switch 2, is provided on a physical cartridge.
