Nintendo Says the Switch 2 Will Only Support VRR In Handheld Mode

May 19,25(9 months ago)

Back in early April, fans eagerly awaiting the Nintendo Switch 2 noticed something intriguing: mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages. These mentions, however, were quickly removed, leaving many to speculate about the feature's availability. Now, Nintendo has provided clarity on the situation. In a statement to NintendoLife, the company acknowledged that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. They clarified that "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error."

When asked about potential VRR support in docked mode through a future firmware update, Nintendo remained tight-lipped, stating they have "nothing to announce on this topic." This means that at launch, those using the Nintendo Switch 2 docked to a TV won't benefit from VRR, which could be disappointing for some users who were hoping for a smoother gaming experience on larger screens.

The confusion around VRR's availability was documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie, who noted how mentions of the feature were gradually disappearing from different sites. While the absence of VRR in docked mode at launch might be a letdown, it's worth noting that other console manufacturers, such as Sony, have introduced VRR support post-launch through firmware updates. This suggests that Nintendo might follow suit in the future.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, the company has revealed a list of games set to receive free performance upgrades on the new console. Titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury are among those getting enhanced. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has assured fans that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
