Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action

Team Ninja's 30th anniversary is shaping up to be a momentous occasion, declared as "The Year of the Ninja." The surprise reveal at Xbox Developer Direct 2025? Not one, but two Ninja Gaiden titles: the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4 and a remastered Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Fumihiko Yasuda, Head of Team Ninja and Producer of Ninja Gaiden 4, expressed his excitement and gratitude to fans, promising an evolution of the series.

Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era of Ninjas

Thirteen years after Ninja Gaiden 3, the mainline series returns with a bang. Developed by the powerhouse duo of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 promises the signature blend of brutally challenging yet deeply rewarding gameplay the series is known for. This collaboration, while surprising, makes perfect sense given Xbox's long-standing relationship with Team Ninja, notably through the Dead or Alive franchise and the Microsoft Game Studios-published Ninja Gaiden 2 for Xbox 360.

A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage

Meet Yakumo, a young ninja from the Raven clan, a rival to the famed Hayabusa clan. His journey to become a Master Ninja forms the core of Ninja Gaiden 4's narrative. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, describes Yakumo's design as aiming to create a character who can stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the epitome of ninja mastery.

Yuji Nakao, Producer and Director from PlatinumGames, explains the decision to introduce a new protagonist: "Since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, we also wanted long-time fans to enjoy the game, so Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo." Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa remains a pivotal figure, playable and a formidable opponent for Yakumo.

Revitalized Combat: Speed, Brutality, and New Styles

Prepare for breakneck-speed combat with the signature brutality of the Ninja Gaiden series. Yakumo's arsenal includes two distinct fighting styles: Raven Style and the newly introduced Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style. Masazaku Hirayama, Team Ninja Director, assures fans that while different from Ryu's style, the action remains true to the series' core. Nakao highlights the collaboration's synergy: "We’re staying true to the challenge and deep action that defines the Ninja Gaiden series, while incorporating the speed and dynamic expression of PlatinumGames."

The game is currently 70-80% complete, entering the polishing phase. More details are promised soon, and Yasuda emphasizes the hands-on experience fans will have with the game.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for a Fall 2025 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic

Responding to fan demand following the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black offers a remastered experience of the 2008 Xbox 360 classic. Available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 (and included with Xbox Game Pass), it features additional playable characters like Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, a nod to Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Yasuda explains the decision: "We wanted to give players something to enjoy as they wait for the release of NINJA GAIDEN 4." He assures fans this version is designed to satisfy both veterans and newcomers.
