Alain Tascan, Netflix's President of Games, foresees a future where the next generation might not be as reliant on gaming consoles, even as giants like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to innovate with new hardware. In an insightful interview with The Game Business after a Netflix event in San Francisco, Tascan discussed the evolving preferences of gaming enthusiasts. When questioned about Netflix's potential entry into the console gaming arena, he expressed skepticism about the younger generation's interest in future consoles like the PlayStation 6.

"Look at the younger generation. Are eight year-olds and ten year-olds dreaming of owning a PlayStation 6? I am not sure," Tascan remarked. He highlighted a shift towards a platform-agnostic future where kids are more interested in interacting with any digital screen, whether at home or in the car. He believes that the traditional console model, with its focus on high definition and specific controllers, might limit Netflix's potential.

Despite his reservations, Tascan admitted a fondness for console gaming, citing Nintendo's Wii as a personal favorite. His extensive experience at major studios like EA, Ubisoft, and Epic Games gives him a deep understanding of traditional console game releases. However, Netflix's trajectory is moving towards a different model, focusing on mobile and accessible gaming.

Netflix has successfully ventured into game adaptations with titles like Stranger Things 3: The Game and Too Hot to Handle: Love Is a Game, available as subscription add-ons. They've also offered well-known games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition directly accessible on mobile devices. Tascan emphasized during the event that Netflix plans to expand this strategy, focusing on party games and positioning itself as a hub for kids and gaming families.

"I am very vigorous about lowering friction and eliminating it if we can," Tascan explained to The Game Business. He acknowledged the role of subscriptions as a form of 'good friction' beneficial for business, but he also mentioned experiments like removing the subscription for Squid Game: Unleashed on mobile, hinting at potential future tests. He identified other forms of friction, such as the need for multiple controllers, the cost of hardware, and the wait time for game downloads, as areas where Netflix aims to reduce barriers for users.

Netflix's commitment to gaming saw a significant increase in engagement in 2023, tripling from the previous year, according to a 2024 statement. This growth followed a CNBC report from 2021 indicating that less than 1% of subscribers were engaging with their gaming offerings. However, in October 2024, Netflix scaled back its gaming ambitions by closing its AAA studio led by former developers of Overwatch, Halo, and God of War. Additionally, a Game Developer report noted recent cuts at Night School Studio, acquired by Netflix in 2021.

While Netflix anticipates a shift away from consoles, industry leaders like Sony and Microsoft are expected to launch next-generation consoles such as the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox. Nintendo is on the cusp of a new era with its eagerly awaited Switch 2, set to be revealed in a dedicated Direct presentation next week, where fans are eager to learn about its features, release date, and pre-order details.
