MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, effective May 30, 2025, following the completion of its fifth and final season. The news, revealed via the game's official Twitter (X) account and website on January 31, 2025, confirmed that Season 5 will be the game's last content update.
Season 5: A Final Farewell
Launching February 4, 2025, and running until May 30, 2025, Season 5 will introduce two new playable characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). All Season 5 content will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's end, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.
Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy
While online servers will be deactivated, players can continue enjoying MultiVersus offline. A local gameplay mode, supporting solo play against AI or multiplayer with up to three friends, will remain accessible. To retain this functionality, players must download the latest game version between February 4th and May 30th, 9 AM PST/PDT respectively. Upon logging in, a local save file will be generated, preserving earned and purchased content linked to the player's account.
Real-money transactions ceased on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium can be used until Season 5's conclusion.
A Brief History and Uncertain Future
Initially launched in July 2022 as a public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity as a free-to-play fighting game, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced several enhancements, including new characters, rollback netcode, and a new PvE mode. Despite these updates, the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues and reported player count decline.
At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. The game remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
