Core Boxes
The core boxes of Monster Hunter World: The Board Game are standalone games, each featuring four hunters and four monsters. These boxes can be combined, allowing you to mix and match characters and monsters from different sets. While most components are unique to each set, there's some overlap, and additional cards are included for combining sets.
Starting with a single core box is advisable. If you find yourself hooked, consider adding smaller expansions before investing in a second core set. Both core sets offer the same high-quality gameplay and components, including impressive monster miniatures that dwarf the hunters, providing a striking sense of scale. The choice between sets should be based on aesthetic appeal or nostalgia from the video game series.

This set transports players to a rugged badlands environment, with boards depicting rocky outcrops, deserts, and swamps. The included monsters are the armored Barroth, the monstrous Jyuratodus, the avian Pukei-Pukei, and the subterranean Diablos. Hunters in this set wield more exotic weapons such as the Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Heavy Bowgun, and Insect Glaive.
Retail Expansions
The board game's Kickstarter campaign introduced several expansions, many of which are still available at retail. However, the Nergigante and Teostra expansions are harder to find, with Teostra being exclusive to Steamforged Games.
Nergigante, Kushala Daora, and Teostra are Elder Dragons, adding new quest content and a challenging five-star difficulty level to the base game. These expansions come with larger miniatures, enhancing the epic feel of your campaign.
While these expansions offer exciting new challenges, they are pricey and some features are specific to one core box or the other. If you're looking to expand your game, consider purchasing the second core set first.
