Reviews & Mini-Views
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99)

Sequels to long-dormant franchises are all the rage these days, mirroring Hollywood's trends. Nintendo's surprise revival of Famicom Detective Club, a series largely known in the West through a brief remake, is a prime example. This new entry marks the first brand-new Famicom Detective Club adventure in years, a welcome development.
The challenge in reviving an old IP lies in balancing faithfulness to the original with modern appeal. Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club stays true to the recent remakes' style, which closely mirrors the originals. This creates a unique blend: modern visuals meet a narrative that surpasses the limitations of 90s-era Nintendo games, yet retains old-school gameplay. This gameplay style will be a defining factor in your enjoyment.

The game begins with the discovery of a deceased student, a paper bag bearing a smiling face over their head. This chilling clue links to unsolved murders from eighteen years prior, each marked by a similar calling card. The urban legend of Emio, a killer promising eternal smiles, is brought into question. Is Emio back? Is this a copycat? Or is it something else entirely? The police are baffled, leading to the involvement of the Utsugi Detective Agency. You'll use classic detective methods—investigation, interrogation—to uncover the truth.
The gameplay involves searching for clues, conversing with characters (often requiring multiple questions to get the necessary information), and connecting the dots to solve the mystery. The process is reminiscent of the investigation sections in Ace Attorney. Depending on your preference for this gameplay style, you may find some aspects tedious. Certain logical connections could use clearer guidance. However, this is typical of the genre, and Emio doesn't stray too far from the norm.

While I have some minor story criticisms, the overall experience was engaging, with twists and turns and well-developed writing. Certain plot points may not resonate with everyone, but I won't spoil the details. This is a mystery best experienced firsthand. The positives outweigh the negatives, and the game's momentum builds nicely.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is unlike typical Nintendo fare, but any potential team rust is expertly masked. The mechanics are perhaps too closely tied to the originals, and the pacing occasionally falters. However, these are minor flaws in an otherwise enjoyable mystery adventure. Welcome back, Detective Club! Let's hope the next installment doesn't take so long.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate ($29.99)

The Switch is building a nice collection of TMNT games. From the Cowabunga Collection to Shredder's Revenge and Wrath of the Mutants, there's something for every fan. Now, Splintered Fate adds a home console-style experience to the mix. Several more titles are on the horizon, so expect a Turtle-filled future!
This one is pretty solid. If you've played the Apple Arcade version, you'll know what to expect. Essentially, it's a TMNT beat 'em up with roguelite elements, similar to Hades. Play solo or with up to four players locally or online. Mikhail and I tested online multiplayer, and it worked flawlessly. While solo play is fine, adding more players significantly enhances the fun.

The story involves Shredder and a mysterious power, putting Splinter in danger. The Turtles must rescue him. Fight Foot Soldiers, use tactical dashes, collect power-ups, and earn currency for permanent upgrades. Death means starting over. It's a roguelite beat 'em up, but with the Turtles—making it inherently better. The game isn't groundbreaking, but it's competently done.
Splintered Fate isn't a must-have for everyone, but TMNT fans will appreciate this unique take on the franchise. The well-implemented multiplayer is a bonus, and it's great to see this social element included. Those unfamiliar with the Turtles may find better roguelites on Switch, but Splintered Fate holds its own in a highly competitive genre.
SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5
