Combos

Mastering the Great Sword involves understanding and executing various combos that can significantly impact a monster's health and improve your chances of victory.

True Charged Slash Combo

Initiate this combo by pressing Triangle/Y three times in succession. Start with an Overhead Slash, followed by a Strong Charged Slash, and conclude with the True Charged Slash. You can charge each slash for increased damage, indicated by the hunter flashing white, yellow, and red. Hitting a soft part of the monster with a True Charged Slash triggers the True Charged Slash (Power), amplifying damage. After hitting the combo, dodge immediately and press Triangle/Y to skip the initial Overhead Slash and transition into a Strong Charged Slash, allowing you to close the distance and inflict more damage quickly.

Forward Lunging Combo

Execute this combo with three presses of the Circle/B button, starting with a Wide Slash, followed by a Tackle, and finishing with a Leaping Wide Slash. Ideal for targeting elusive enemies, this combo covers a large area while maintaining potency. Using Focus Mode can help target weak spots and wounds more effectively.

Stationary Combo

When a monster is under status effects like paralysis, employ this combo: a Wide Slash followed by a Rising Slash, repeated twice for a quick four-hit sequence. Though not the highest in damage, it keeps the pressure on the monster.

Guard and Counters

With the Great Sword, players can block incoming damage and initiate powerful counterattacks with precise timing.

Offset Rising Slash

While the Rising Slash is excellent for reaching high targets, it's even better as a counter. Press Triangle/Y and Circle/B simultaneously to unleash it, or hold to charge. Release just as the monster attacks to knock it down and follow with a Cross Slash using Triangle/Y. Timing is critical; release too early or late, and you risk taking more damage.

Guarding

Hold R2/RT to guard, reducing damage at the cost of stamina. Though not ideal for long fights due to chip damage, a well-timed Perfect Guard negates all damage. Achieve this by guarding the moment an attack lands, accompanied by visual and sound cues. A Perfect Guard can lead to a Power Clash, where mashing Circle/B can knock the monster down, setting up further attacks.

With these strategies, you're well on your way to mastering the Great Sword in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. For more tips and guides, be sure to explore The Escapist.
