Every Marvel TV Show in the Disney+ Era Ranked

From the iconic Incredible Hulk TV series to the gripping Netflix street-level shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage, Marvel Comics have long been a powerhouse in small screen adaptations. While previous attempts to integrate these TV shows with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have often faltered—think of Runaways and Cloak and Dagger—2021 marked a turning point. Marvel Studios embarked on a new era, launching a series of deeply interconnected shows on Disney+, the flagship streaming service of the Mouse House, enhancing the multi-billion dollar film franchise's universe.

As the charming Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man swings onto our screens as the 13th Disney+ Marvel show in just four years, it's a perfect moment to reflect on the Marvel Studios television journey so far. Just like the Avengers enjoying shawarma amidst the ruins of New York, our team of Marvel enthusiasts at IGN gathered to rank all 12 of the Disney+ Marvel TV shows released to date. Stay tuned for the addition of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man once the series concludes.

  1. Secret Invasion

Disney+

It's surprising to find ourselves discussing a Secret Invasion series that was universally panned by our voting panel, ranking it as the weakest entry in Marvel TV's catalog. In the comics, Secret Invasion is a pivotal and transformative event, yet the show seemed detached from its source material. Director Ali Selim openly admitted to not reading the comics, believing they were unnecessary for crafting a compelling narrative. While the MCU has demonstrated that fresh perspectives can revitalize iconic tales, Secret Invasion fell short.

The series aimed to capture the espionage vibe of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, focusing on Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) thwarting a Skrull invasion. However, it was hampered by slow pacing, an AI-generated opening, the abrupt killing off of a beloved female character, and the introduction of a bizarre, possibly one-off superpowered character. These elements left Secret Invasion languishing at the bottom of the MCU TV series on Disney+.

  1. Echo

Disney+

Echo marks a significant step up from Secret Invasion, though it still lands in our 11th spot. Alaqua Cox reprises her role from Hawkeye as the deaf Cheyenne superhero Echo, delving into an intimate, action-packed narrative of her return to the reservation. Here, she grapples with her powers, her past, and her complex relationship with Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), the Daredevil villain who raised her.

Like many later Marvel Studios TV projects, Echo faced changes, resulting in a shortened episode run that left some fans wanting more. Nonetheless, it boasts standout action sequences, including an electrifying opening fight against Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). Echo also broke ground with its predominantly indigenous cast and crew, making it a unique, emotionally resonant entry into the MCU despite not making a major impact on our rankings.

  1. Moon Knight

Disney+

You might be surprised to see Moon Knight, starring Oscar Isaac, ranked so low, but it didn't resonate strongly enough with our voters to climb higher. The series delves into the dark, multifaceted world of Marc Spector, whose multiple personalities fuel a tale of mystery and chaos. Drawing inspiration from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Indiana Jones, and Marvel's Legion, Moon Knight offers a surrealist take on the antihero's struggle to maintain his sanity amidst intense action.

The show successfully introduces Scarlet Scarab (May Calamawy), who emerges as a standout character. With F. Murray Abraham voicing Khonshu and Ethan Hawke portraying the villainous Dr. Arthur Harrow, Moon Knight boasts a strong cast. Yet, despite its efforts, the series didn't capture enough momentum to secure a higher position on our list or warrant a second season.

  1. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Disney+

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, featuring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles from the Marvel films, had the potential to soar but struggled to take flight. While fans appreciated the chemistry between the leads, the series was weighed down by its murky moral dilemmas, heavy reliance on the Blip timeline, and a focus on espionage rather than thrilling aerial action.

As the second Marvel TV show to hit Disney+, it was initially slated to be the first but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing WandaVision to take the debut spot. The production faced significant interruptions, pausing from March to August 2020. Despite these challenges, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has contributed key narrative elements to the MCU, particularly relevant to this year's Thunderbolts film.
