On January 19th, a temporary shutdown of TikTok in the US unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse, a ByteDance subsidiary. This resulted in a 24-hour outage, after which the game was restored, though in-app purchases remain temporarily unavailable.

The incident prompted Second Dinner Studios, Marvel Snap's developer, to explore switching publishers and internalizing some services to mitigate future political risks. TikTok’s precarious position, granted only a 90-day extension to sell a 50% stake to a US entity, leaves Marvel Snap vulnerable to further disruptions should the sale fail.

While many players experienced authorization issues, PC users via Steam remained unaffected. The unexpected nature of the outage, leaving players unaware and potentially having made in-game purchases prior to the shutdown, caused considerable frustration.
