Nexus Mods Bans Donald Trump Marvel Rivals Mod Due to Sociopolitical Concerns

A recently uploaded Donald Trump mod for the popular game Marvel Rivals has been removed from Nexus Mods, a prominent modding platform. The mod, which replaced Captain America's in-game model with that of Donald Trump, sparked controversy and ultimately violated Nexus Mods' established policy against mods involving US sociopolitical issues.

Launched less than a month ago, Marvel Rivals has quickly gained millions of players. The game's hero shooter mechanics encourage strategic gameplay and creative character interactions. Players have been enhancing their experience with various mods, ranging from cosmetic skins to alternative character models from other franchises. The Trump mod, which gained traction on social media, even prompted searches for a corresponding Joe Biden mod.

The removal of the Trump mod, resulting in a "not found" error on Nexus Mods, aligns with a 2020 blog post by the platform outlining its ban on mods related to US sociopolitical matters. This policy, implemented around the time of the 2020 US presidential election, aims to maintain a neutral and inclusive modding community.

Reactions on social media were mixed. Many players found the ban unsurprising, citing the incongruity of Trump's image with Captain America's established persona. Others expressed dissatisfaction with Nexus Mods' political restrictions. It's worth noting that while many Trump-related mods have likely been removed from Nexus Mods, similar mods for other games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2 remain available.

Interestingly, Marvel Rivals developer NetEase Games has yet to comment on the use of character mods, particularly those depicting controversial figures. The company is currently focused on addressing other game-related issues, including bug fixes and resolving wrongful player bans.
