Mark Hamill Rejects Star Wars Return, Rules Out Force Ghost Role
If fans were hoping Mark Hamill might reprise his iconic role as Luke Skywalker's Force ghost, they'll need to recalibrate expectations. The legendary actor has definitively closed the door on returning to the Star Wars universe, stating it's time for the franchise to shift focus from legacy characters to new stories.

During an interview with ComicBook.com promoting his new film The Life of Chuck, Hamill addressed speculation about potentially appearing as Luke's spirit in the upcoming Rey-focused Star Wars installment, New Jedi Order. His response left no room for interpretation: "The robes stayed behind in The Last Jedi," Hamill quipped, referencing Luke's final scene in the 2017 film.
"I'm eternally grateful to George Lucas for giving me this incredible opportunity back when Star Wars was just 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,'" Hamill reflected. "None of us anticipated it becoming this cultural phenomenon that would span generations. But I've had my time in that galaxy - now it should be about fresh faces and new adventures."
The actor humorously added: "Let's be clear - my character left his Jedi robes physically behind. I'm certainly not showing up as some sort of naked Force ghost!"
While Hamill's journey concludes, Daisy Ridley's Rey will return in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order, set approximately 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker's events. The film will follow Rey's efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order.
Details remain scarce, but Ridley teased to AlloCiné earlier this year: "When I understood the story direction, I knew I had to be involved. This offers a really compelling new perspective on the Star Wars universe while taking the narrative somewhere excitingly different."
The Star Wars pipeline continues with The Mandalorian and Grogu slated for 2026, followed by Shawn Levy's Starfighter featuring Ryan Gosling in 2027.
Star Wars' Expanding Galaxy
Lucasfilm unveiled an ambitious slate at 2023's Star Wars Celebration, including Dave Filoni's New Republic film bridging The Mandalorian series, James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi exploring Force origins, and the aforementioned New Jedi Order.
While plans inevitably evolve across Star Wars' cinematic and television projects, one certainty remains: Mark Hamill's Jedi Master won't be making any ethereal comebacks.
