During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we received exciting updates on the game's brand new Free Roam mode. This mode promises to be highly multiplayer and gives players the freedom to explore the vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world of Mario Kart World. Unlike previous Mario Kart games, where tracks were isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates tracks into an expansive open world, allowing players to seamlessly drive from one track to another and explore the areas in between.

Although we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a thorough look at what Free Roam mode entails. This innovative feature allows players to venture anywhere on the expansive map, turning downtime between races into an adventurous experience. The world is filled with hidden collectibles, including coins and ? panels, though the exact benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery. Additionally, P-Switches are scattered throughout the environment, triggering mini-challenges such as collecting blue coins when activated.

Free Roam mode also introduces a Photo Mode, enabling players to capture memorable moments with their racers in various poses and angles at any time. This mode isn't limited to solo play; it supports multiplayer as well. Players can explore together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply enjoy each other's company. Free Roam accommodates up to four players on the same system through split-screen, and up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.
