Bungie's Sci-Fi Extraction Shooter, Marathon: A Developer Update After a Year of Silence

After over a year of radio silence, Bungie's highly anticipated sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, has finally received a much-needed developer update. Announced at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game generated significant excitement, but information remained scarce until now.

Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed the community directly, confirming the game's progress and planned playtests for 2025. While gameplay footage remains unavailable, Ziegler confirmed the game is "on track," undergoing substantial changes based on extensive player testing. He teased a class-based system, featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities. Two Runners, "Thief" and "Stealth," were briefly showcased via screenshots, hinting at their respective playstyles.

Ziegler emphasized the expansion of playtests in 2025, inviting a larger player base to participate in key development milestones. He encouraged fans to wishlist the game on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to demonstrate interest and facilitate future communication.

A Modern Take on a Classic

Marathon reimagines Bungie's classic 1990s trilogy, offering a fresh take on the franchise without requiring prior knowledge. Set on Tau Ceti IV, players—the Runners—compete for alien artifacts and valuable loot, either solo or in teams of three. The game prioritizes PvP, foregoing a single-player campaign to focus on player-driven narratives within the overarching game story.

The Road to Release

The extended silence was partly attributed to a leadership change following the departure of the original project lead, Chris Barrett, and significant workforce reductions at Bungie. Despite these challenges, Ziegler assured fans that development is progressing smoothly, with cross-play and cross-save features confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. While a release date remains unannounced, the planned 2025 playtests offer a glimmer of hope for eager fans.
