The sequel opened with a modest $10.2 million domestically and $6.958 million internationally in its first weekend—nowhere near the success of the original M3GAN, which debuted in December 2022 and went on to earn $180 million globally. As of now, M3GAN 2.0 has grossed just $36,496,600 worldwide ($22,446,600 domestic and $14,050,000 international), marking it as a clear box office disappointment.

IGN’s M3GAN 2.0 review gave the film a 6/10, noting: “M3GAN 2.0 hotswaps horror for sci-fi/action to mixed results, but M3GAN’s absolutely heinous wit and killer moves leave her, and not the new genres, the star of the show.” This sentiment aligns with feedback from audiences who expected more of the eerie, razor-sharp doll they loved—not a genre-shifted version.

Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse, recently addressed the failure on the latest episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, admitting missteps in the creative direction: “I’ve been in pain all weekend long and I’ve been thinking about all this stuff way too much.” He continued, “We all thought M3GAN was like Superman—we could do anything to her. Change genres, make her a good guy, alter her look—but we overestimated how deeply people were attached to the original concept.”

Blum acknowledged that the pivot from horror thriller to action-comedy alienated fans who simply wanted “more M3GAN, just like she is.” With Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 scheduled for December, Blumhouse will likely be reevaluating its strategy for balancing innovation with audience expectations.
