LEGO Unveils Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers with Hidden Art Surprise
The first thing to know about the LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers build is its impressive size. Standing at 21 inches high and 16 inches wide, it's approximately 60% the size of the original painting. This makes it large enough to be a bit unwieldy when you're picking it up, but perfect for displaying as a statement piece in your home.

LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers
Priced at $199.99, available exclusively at the LEGO Store, this set is not just a tribute to one of the world's most famous artworks; it's also designed to be hung in your home as a piece of art. This reflects LEGO's ongoing transition from being merely an adult curiosity to a respected adult hobby.
LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh painted his iconic series of Sunflowers during his time in Arles, France, marking a prolific period in his artistic journey. Van Gogh had a profound emotional connection to the sunflower, viewing it as a symbol of gratitude. In a letter to a friend, he wrote:
"If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."
In August 1888, van Gogh created four versions of sunflowers in a vase. He returned to this theme in January 1889, producing a repetition of the third version and two different repetitions of the fourth version.

Among these seven paintings, the fourth version and its two repetitions are the most renowned. The original fourth version (F454) is displayed at the National Gallery in London, England. One repetition (F457) is showcased at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo, Japan. The other repetition (F458), perhaps the most iconic due to its vibrant color composition, is housed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The Van Gogh Museum, established in 1973, collaborated with LEGO to produce the LEGO Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set, which pays homage to the F458 repetition. This LEGO rendition is crafted as a three-dimensional relief, using abstract pieces to emulate van Gogh's distinctive thick brushstrokes.

Opening the box, you'll find 34 numbered bags and a printed instruction booklet with a QR code. Scanning this code leads you to a podcast exploring van Gogh and the inspirations behind his work.
I appreciated the build's practical design. You start by constructing the painting's frame, which I completed and leaned against the wall. Next, you build the canvas with the painting on top.

The final step involves mounting the canvas into the frame and securing it with pins, adding a personal touch reminiscent of the real-life staging process. This detail enhances the set's perceived value and importance.
There's a delightful Easter egg hidden in the canvas' construction. Art experts noted that van Gogh extended the height of the canvas with a wooden strip during the painting process to give the sunflowers more room. LEGO cleverly replicates this by having you build the canvas and then attach a separate strip at the top with pins. The brown bricks used mimic the appearance of wood, as seen in the photo below, circled in red.

This detail might be invisible to casual observers, but it's a special experience for the LEGO builder, echoing the trial and error of a master artist. It also adds an element of exclusivity, allowing builders to choose whether to share this secret with others.
Constructing the full-bloom sunflowers can be a bit tedious, but it's necessary for authenticity. Van Gogh himself didn't cut corners, and the repetitive nature of the build mirrors his dedication. It's best to take breaks and enjoy the process, as this isn't a set you'd want to rush through.

I particularly enjoyed building the wilting flowers and those depicted in profile, which seemed abstract at first but made sense when viewed from a distance. The abstract pieces come together to form recognizable stems and leaves.
A common question I get is, "Where do you put a LEGO set after building it?" With this set, the answer is straightforward: on my dining room wall. It's designed to be displayed as art, and you can look forward to enjoying it long after the build is complete. Even a week after finishing it, I still find joy in discovering new three-dimensional details. This is the first outstanding LEGO set of 2025, and I highly recommend it.
LEGO Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers, Set #31215, retails for $199.99 and includes 2615 pieces. It's available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
