Keanu Reeves has provided the most promising update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic, "Constantine." In his latest statement, Reeves confirmed that the project has moved forward significantly, with a script now in development.

John Constantine, the occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, was brought to life by Reeves in the original film, which garnered a dedicated fanbase over the years. Despite the passage of two decades and continuous demand for a sequel, it seems that "Constantine 2" might finally become a reality. Reeves recently shared that they pitched a story to DC Studios, which has been approved, and they are now working on the script.

"We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’" Reeves told Inverse. "So, we're going to try and write a script."

While this development is encouraging, it's important to note that there is no guarantee that the script will be greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. "Constantine 2" is not yet a confirmed project in the rebooted DC Universe, and neither Gunn nor Safran have mentioned it as a possibility. Thus, the project remains on the edge of realization.

Reeves also hinted that, should the film be made, it would continue in the same universe as the original. "We're not going off that," he assured fans, playfully adding, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."

This news follows comments from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who mentioned in September that a script for "Constantine 2" was already in his inbox, though he had not yet read it due to his high hopes for its quality. Speaking to ComicBook, di Bonaventura said, "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough. I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
