Jason Isaacs Chooses Unexpected Actor for Lucius Malfoy in HBO's Harry Potter Series

While Thailand may be a world away from the magical realm of Hogwarts, Jason Isaacs, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films and currently starring in The White Lotus Season 3, has shared his intriguing thoughts on who should step into his iconic shoes for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. In a recent interview with Variety, Isaacs suggested none other than the versatile Meryl Streep to take on the role of Lucius Malfoy.
"She can do anything, that woman. There’s literally no limit to what she can do," Isaacs praised Streep, highlighting her ability to transcend traditional casting boundaries. Streep has previously showcased her range by portraying a male character in the HBO miniseries adaptation of the play Angels in America, where she played an elderly male rabbi among other roles. This versatility suggests she could indeed bring a unique interpretation to Lucius Malfoy.
Despite his strong endorsement of Streep, Isaacs expressed a hands-off approach to offering advice to whoever ultimately takes on the role. "I wouldn’t have any advice at all. Why would I bother?" he remarked, confident in the talents of the actors being considered for the series. "I know some of the people they’re casting already. They’re brilliant actors. It’s going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me."
Isaacs first portrayed Lucius Malfoy in the second Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and continued to reprise the role through to the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. As for the new adaptation, the only confirmed casting at the time of this article's publication is John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, a role previously played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.
Other roles nearing casting include Severus Snape, originally played by Alan Rickman, and Minerva McGonagall, originally portrayed by Maggie Smith. Rumors suggest that Paapa Essiedu, known from Black Mirror, may take on the role of Snape, while Janet McTeer, recognized from Jessica Jones, is reportedly in consideration for McGonagall. However, these casting choices remain unconfirmed.
