The Japanese government has released an engaging Minecraft map featuring the world's largest underground flood prevention facility, the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, known as G-Cans. This fascinating map is available for free download, allowing you to explore one of Tokyo's lesser-known yet iconic locations right from your own home.

G-Cans is a real-life marvel of disaster prevention, renowned for its awe-inspiring "pressure adjustment water tank." This vast space, supported by 59 massive pillars, resembles an underground temple (chika shinden) and is a sight to behold. Its cinematic appeal has made it a popular filming location for music videos, Japanese TV dramas such as Kamen Rider, and movies. The atmosphere of this "underground temple" truly captures the imagination.

While G-Cans can be toured in person during dry seasons, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has now made it possible to explore this atmospheric facility within Minecraft. MLIT has even released a video on their official YouTube channel that provides a brief overview of G-Cans' purpose and showcases its representation in the blocky world of Minecraft.

The free Minecraft G-Cans map goes beyond just the facility itself. It includes an overground area complete with rivers, homes, and neighborhoods, offering players a comprehensive view of how G-Cans safeguards the community. You can also step into the control room and experiment with draining flood water into the shafts to understand the facility's operational mechanics firsthand.

MLIT's recreation of G-Cans in Minecraft serves an educational purpose, helping players grasp the facility's role in disaster prevention and its sheer scale. In reality, G-Cans features over 6km of concrete tunnels beneath Saitama Prefecture in the Greater Tokyo Area. During Japan's rainy and typhoon seasons, its five shafts efficiently capture water from flood-prone rivers, which is then gradually released into the Edogawa River and Tokyo Bay. Since its completion in 2006, after more than a decade of construction, G-Cans has significantly contributed to flood control in the region.
