Hytale, the anticipated Minecraft rival unveiled in 2018, has been canceled, and its developer is ceasing operations.

Hypixel Studios confirmed that the Riot Games-supported, Minecraft-inspired project has halted development, with the studio now winding down.

Hytale debuted in December 2018 with a trailer garnering 61 million YouTube views. The original description stated:

Hytale blends sandbox exploration with roleplaying depth, plunging players into a procedurally crafted world of towering structures and vast dungeons filled with rewarding challenges. It enables block-by-block building, scripting, and minigame design through user-friendly, robust tools.

The project’s buzz stemmed from the developers’ pedigree, having co-founded Hypixel, a globally renowned Minecraft server. Riot Games, known for League of Legends, backed the venture and later acquired the studio.

Yet, the Hytale vision has now ended. “This isn’t the result anyone at Hypixel or Riot hoped for,” co-founder Noxy’s statement on the Hytale website reads. “Despite years of effort, adaptation, and exploring all options, we couldn’t fully realize Hytale’s potential.”

What led to this? Noxy noted that Hytale’s technical goals became increasingly intricate. Even after overhauling the game engine, the team found the project “still fell short of where it needed to be.”

“It was evident we’d require far more time to meet the game’s ambitious goals,” Noxy added.

Scaling back or delaying the release was dismissed, as it “would have diluted what made Hytale unique,” Noxy said. “It wouldn’t have been the game we aimed to create or the one players deserved.”

Riot sought investors to salvage the project, but those efforts proved fruitless. Impacted employees will receive “generous severance and support to transition to new opportunities.”

The cancellation follows a spring 2025 update where Hypixel shared early-year progress, including a new character teased in late 2023. Engine advancements were also emphasized.
