Halo and Destiny Facing Backlash Over Layoffs
Bungie's Massive Layoffs Spark Outrage Amidst CEO's Lavish Spending
Bungie, the acclaimed studio behind Halo and Destiny, is undergoing a major restructuring, resulting in widespread layoffs and increased integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. This has ignited a firestorm of criticism from employees and the gaming community.
220 Employees Laid Off
CEO Pete Parsons announced the dismissal of 220 employees—approximately 17% of the workforce—citing rising development costs, industry shifts, and economic challenges. The layoffs affected all levels, including executive positions, and followed the successful launch of Destiny 2: The Final Shape. Parsons stated the goal is to support departing employees with severance packages and benefits. He attributed the need for layoffs to overambitious expansion into multiple game franchises, stretching resources too thin.

Increased Integration with PlayStation Studios
The layoffs coincide with a deeper integration with PlayStation Studios, following Sony's 2022 acquisition of Bungie. While initially promised operational independence, Bungie's failure to meet performance metrics has led to this shift. SIE CEO Hermen Hulst will likely assume a more active role in Bungie's management. 155 roles are being integrated into SIE, and a new PlayStation Studios studio will be formed from one of Bungie's incubation projects. This marks a significant departure from Bungie's independent history.

Employee Backlash and Community Outrage
The layoffs have prompted furious reactions from former and current Bungie employees on social media. Criticism is directed at both the decision itself and the leadership's handling of the situation. Many express a sense of betrayal, particularly given the company's simultaneous financial struggles and CEO Pete Parsons' reported spending of over $2.3 million on luxury cars since late 2022, including purchases made shortly before and after the layoffs. This includes a $91,500 Corvette and other high-value vehicles.

The gaming community has also joined the chorus of disapproval, echoing the concerns about leadership and the perceived disconnect between the company's financial hardships and the CEO's personal spending. Calls for Parsons' resignation are prevalent. This widespread backlash underscores the severity of the situation and the deep-seated discontent within and outside of Bungie.
