The Game of Thrones creator conceived the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco heavily featured Martin's contribution in promotional materials, crediting both him and Hidetaka Miyazaki with creating the game's world.

While sidestepping questions about an Elden Ring sequel during IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin revealed discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation are underway. This isn't the first such tease; FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to an adaptation, but only with a "very strong partner" to handle the production aspects, citing FromSoftware's lack of experience in other media.

However, Martin revealed a potential roadblock: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. He stated his involvement in any Elden Ring movie is uncertain, given his significant delay in completing his novel. The long-awaited sixth installment in A Song of Ice and Fire has been delayed for over a decade, leading to speculation about its completion. Martin himself acknowledges the substantial delay and the resulting uncertainty.

Martin detailed his contribution to Elden Ring, explaining his role in world-building. FromSoftware sought a rich history preceding the game's present-day events, and Martin provided concepts about the world's magic and runes, collaborating with the team over several sessions. He notes that much of his world-building material, typical of large-scale fantasy projects, remains unused and could potentially inform future installments. He drew a comparison to Tolkien's extensive background material for The Lord of the Rings.
