GameCube Fans Excited for Switch 2: New Nintendo Filings Explained

The gaming community is buzzing with excitement over new Nintendo filings that hint at a potential revival of the classic GameCube controller, possibly for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to reports from Nintendo Life, a recent FCC filing for a "game controller" aligns with the specifications of the Switch 2, and speculation is rife that this could be a wireless Bluetooth controller reminiscent of the beloved GameCube design.
Internet sleuths on Famiboards have delved into the filing and discovered that one of the images shows a label location that strikingly matches the placement on the back of a GameCube controller, just behind the C-Stick. This has led many to believe that Nintendo might be planning to integrate GameCube controllers for playing GameCube classics through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service on the Switch 2.

While some have speculated that this could be a new version of the Switch Pro Controller, the current buzz centers around its potential integration with Nintendo’s Switch Online service. This service already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming, and adding GameCube titles could be a significant draw for fans who have long awaited the inclusion of these classics alongside the existing lineup of NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games.
The prospect of enjoying GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch 2 has fans eagerly anticipating further developments. The Switch 2 itself was teased in January with a trailer that highlighted its backwards compatibility and an additional USB-C port. However, details about other games and the functionality of a mysterious new Joy-Con button remain undisclosed, though theories about its use as a mouse-like interface have gained traction.
Further stirring the pot, a recent Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers might be attachable in an inverted position, utilizing magnets instead of the original Switch's rails. This innovation could allow for customizable button placements and potentially introduce new gameplay mechanics.
As for the Switch 2's release, analysts predict a price range of $400 to $500, with June being a speculated launch month. Nintendo has promised more details in an upcoming Direct scheduled for April 2, which should shed more light on the console's features and capabilities.
In the meantime, fans can relive the GameCube era with Metroid Prime Remastered, which offers a taste of GameCube nostalgia on the current Nintendo Switch.
