The 16" model features a 2560x1600 240Hz IPS display, while the 18" model comes with a 2560x1600 300Hz IPS display. The larger 18" model also includes a dedicated numpad and improved cooling. Both discounted configurations are equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, 64GB of DDR5-6400MHz RAM, and a 2TB SSD. The 64GB of RAM is a notable upgrade, as these laptops typically come with 32GB at this price point.
This CPU / GPU Combo Excels in Any Game
The Area-51 laptop is powered by the formidable Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, which achieves a max turbo frequency of 5.4GHz with 24 cores and 40MB of L2 cache. According to Passmark, this processor leads the market, outperforming the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D by 7%.
Tom's Hardware reports that the RTX 5080 mobile GPU offers a 15%-20% performance boost over the RTX 4080 and is about 5% more powerful than the RTX 4090. It also presents a better value than the pricier RTX 5090, trailing by only 15% while being nearly $1,000 cheaper. With the QHD+ (2560x1600) display on the Alienware Area-51, this GPU is well-suited to run new and upcoming games at high frame rates, especially with DLSS 4 support.
The Area-51: New Style, More Power, Better Cooling
The 2025 Alienware Area-51 gaming laptop features a magnesium alloy chassis and upgraded cooling to manage the heat from its advanced components. Enhancements include additional fans, larger cutouts for better airflow, increased copper usage, and a new thermal interface material for efficient heat dissipation. Dell claims the laptop can handle a power ceiling of up to 240W TDP without increasing noise levels.
The design of the Area-51 emphasizes smooth contours with rounded edges and soft corners, moving away from the typical squared-off look. The hinges are mostly internal, making them nearly invisible. As expected from an Alienware product, there are numerous options for RGB LED customization. Connectivity options include three USB Type-A 3.2 15Gbps ports (one with PowerShare), two Thunderbolt / USB Type-C ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a card reader. The 16" model weighs 7.5 pounds, while the 18" model weighs 9.6 pounds.
