FF9 Remaster Shelved, Confirms Director

Final Fantasy XIV's director, Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P), has addressed persistent speculation regarding a potential Final Fantasy IX remake, fueled by the recent FFXIV collaboration event featuring FFIX references. Yoshida clarified that the collaboration, while a tribute to the beloved 1999 RPG, is entirely independent of any FFIX remake plans.

In an interview with JPGames, Yoshida explained that FFXIV's design is intended as a "theme park" for the Final Fantasy franchise, incorporating elements from various titles. The inclusion of FFIX references within the Dawntrail expansion stemmed from this overarching concept, and not from any concurrent remake development. He explicitly stated that the timing was coincidental and that no FFIX remake project influenced the collaboration's creation. The team's decision to incorporate FFIX was driven by their internal love for the game, not a marketing strategy to hint at a remake.

While acknowledging the considerable scope and complexity of a potential FFIX remake – citing the game's vast content – Yoshida didn't dismiss the possibility entirely. He expressed his support for any team undertaking such a project, offering well wishes for their endeavor. Despite the absence of any concrete announcement, Yoshida's enthusiasm for FFIX is evident, leaving a small spark of hope for fans eagerly awaiting a remake.

The FFXIV collaboration, therefore, serves as a standalone homage to FFIX, offering fans a taste of nostalgia while clarifying that it doesn't foreshadow an imminent remake announcement. For now, fans will have to content themselves with the current FFXIV references or patiently await further news regarding a potential FFIX remake.
