25th Anniversary Website Launched
Square Enix has unveiled a special anniversary website for Final Fantasy IX's 25th year. The site confirms they're "preparing various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations."
The anniversary collection features premium FF9 goods including collectible figures, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and story compendiums. The developers note additional announcements will follow throughout the anniversary period.
Originally launching on PlayStation on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game received several re-releases including a 2012 collector's edition, 2016 mobile remaster, and subsequent ports to modern platforms between 2017-2019.
Potential FF9 Remake and Dormant Anime Project
The anniversary launch has rekindled speculation about a potential FF9 remake, fueled by the success of Final Fantasy VII's remake series. In NHK's 2019 fan poll, FF9 ranked as the fourth most popular entry in the franchise. While the anniversary site doesn't confirm a remake, the game's enduring popularity makes it a strong candidate.
Another anticipated project is the long-dormant FF9 animated series announced in 2021. Titled "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the anime was planned as a sequel set a decade after the original game, focusing on Vivi's descendants. Despite initial excitement, the project has remained silent since its announcement.
Originally developed by Cyber Group Studios before their bankruptcy, the anime's rights have attracted interest from potential buyers including United Smile and Newen Studios, who aim to revive production.
