"Doctor Who Animated Spin-Off Revealed Amid Uncertainty About Main Series' Future"
The BBC has unveiled plans for a brand-new Doctor Who spin-off series, set to premiere on the UK’s children's channel CBeebies. This announcement arrives during a particularly uncertain period for the long-running sci-fi flagship show.
At this stage, very few details about the new animated series have been revealed. It’s evident that the project is still in its infancy, with the BBC actively seeking a "passionate production company" to bring the concept to life.
News of a new Doctor Who animated series naturally brings Disney into focus. The entertainment giant co-financed the show’s most recent two seasons and also backed the upcoming live-action spin-off The War Between the Land and Sea. Additionally, one episode from the latest season saw the Doctor transformed into an animated character.
However, the BBC has made it clear today that Disney will not be part of this particular animated endeavor. Meanwhile, fans are still awaiting confirmation on whether Disney intends to continue funding future episodes of Doctor Who at all.
Indeed, today’s reveal raises a host of questions about the future direction of Doctor Who, which recently concluded a season met with mixed critical reception and considerable uncertainty regarding what comes next. The season finale marked the departure of lead actor Ncuti Gatwa, with reshoots altering the original ending.
To date, the BBC has not confirmed if or when production will begin on a new season of Doctor Who, nor has it clarified whether Billie Piper—who appeared following Gatwa’s transformation—is stepping into the role of a new Doctor or portraying some other enigmatic figure.
All of this makes the timing of the CBeebies animated spin-off seem somewhat unusual. With no information yet available about the cast or setting, the BBC’s statement hints at the Doctor’s involvement but stops short of confirming it outright.
“Everyone is welcome at CBeebies, including the Doctor,” said Patricia Hidalgo, Director of BBC Children's and Education. “This much-loved franchise entertains millions around the world, so it is only right that our younger audience get to experience the wonder and magic of the Doctor in a brand new format.”
If the intention is truly to showcase the magic of the Doctor, then it seems logical that the character would appear. However, there is currently no indication as to which incarnation of the Time Lord might feature.

“This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming companies to pitch for this new project,” Hidalgo added. She emphasized that the series won’t be arriving anytime soon, reinforcing the BBC’s ongoing commitment to supporting and investing in the UK animation industry.
The BBC has a rich history of Doctor Who spin-offs, including the adult-themed Torchwood, the teen-oriented Class, and the earlier children’s series The Sarah Jane Adventures. While none of these shows centered around the Doctor, the character did make occasional guest appearances—most notably in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Given that precedent, perhaps this new animated project doesn’t require a current Doctor either—and maybe now is the perfect time to explore such a venture. Even if new main-series episodes were greenlit immediately, scheduling, filming, and post-production timelines suggest the show won’t return before 2027 at the earliest.
So, what could this new animated series entail? One possibility is a reappearance of Lux, the animated antagonist introduced in the latest season. However, given the intended young audience of CBeebies, such a character might be considered too intense. A more age-appropriate option could be a continuation of the story elements from Space Babies, a controversial recent episode featuring a spacecraft crewed entirely by toddlers. Could this be where Captain Poppy, the pram-piloted commander, makes her triumphant return?
Whatever the final concept may be, and with production still in early stages, Doctor Who fans should brace themselves for another period of waiting before further details emerge.
