Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Weak Box Office Start
Snow White, the latest live-action adaptation from Disney, experienced a challenging opening weekend at the box office, marking one of the lowest domestic totals for any of Disney's remakes to date. Directed by Marc Webb, known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man films, Snow White managed to pull in $43 million domestically. While this figure was enough to top the charts for the week and secure the second biggest opening of 2025 so far, it fell short of expectations and trailed behind the domestic launch of 2019's live-action Dumbo, which debuted with $45 million. For perspective, other Disney remakes such as 2019's The Lion King, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2016's The Jungle Book, and 2023's The Little Mermaid all boasted opening weekend grosses exceeding $100 million domestically.
Internationally, Snow White also had a subdued start, earning $44.3 million over its opening weekend. This brings the global total to $87.3 million, according to Comscore estimates. Snow White, a live-action retelling of Disney's 1937 animated classic, stars Rachel Zegler, a seasoned musical actress, in the titular role, with Gal Gadot, known for her portrayal of Wonder Woman, as the Evil Queen. With a reported production budget exceeding $250 million, the film now faces a steep climb to break even, especially when factoring in marketing expenses.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for Snow White. Disney's previous film, Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the Lion King remake, also had a weak start with a domestic opening of $35.4 million in December but eventually amassed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is likely banking on a similar 'sleeper hit' trajectory for Snow White, despite ongoing concerns about the performance of other recent releases like Captain America: Brave New World. After six weekends, Captain America has grossed $400.8 million globally, with $192.1 million from the domestic market and $208.7 million internationally.
IGN's review of Snow White awarded it a 7/10, commending the film for meaningfully adapting its original source rather than simply replicating it. The review stated, "Snow White is a live-action Disney remake that meaningfully adapts its original, rather than creating a lesser mimicry."
