Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Fighting Lu Bu in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is not for the faint-hearted. In my playthrough, it took me over an hour to defeat this legendary warrior. However, there are compelling reasons to take on this challenge. First, the bragging rights alone are worth it; defeating Lu Bu is a badge of honor among players. Additionally, you might not have a choice if you align with Shu or Wei, as you'll face him in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Moreover, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate earns you the "The Strongest" trophy, and if you conquer him in the post-game, you unlock the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd. These incentives make the battle with Lu Bu highly rewarding.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure you're equipped with the right gear. A weapon like a sword that can deliver multiple hits and stagger him is essential, along with Battle Arts that require minimal Bravery, activate quickly, and have a wide range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell are crucial to boost your health and defense, as Lu Bu’s attacks can drain your health rapidly. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be key to accumulating Bravery during the fight.

In most encounters, Lu Bu starts the battle mounted on Red Hare. This initial phase is relatively straightforward; Lu Bu charges around the area on his horse. Though fast, he occasionally pauses, providing an opportunity to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited AOE, except for Red Hare's aerial crash. Once Lu Bu's health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His swift attacks and rapid movement across the battlefield require constant vigilance. When he's surrounded by a red aura, he's immune to staggering or interruption. Be prepared to evade his triple charges, and if he attempts to grab you without his spear, dodge swiftly to avoid severe damage.

His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow, followed by three massive arrows fired in quick succession, capable of juggling and annihilating your health. Equip a Battle Art like Absconding Slash to counter this from a distance; close-range moves like Palm Strike will result in instant death. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can save you if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in his combos.

Fortunately, Lu Bu can be juggled during this phase, allowing you to charge your Battle Arts quickly and break his Fortitude meter. Stay close to better anticipate his moves and focus on evasion.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently depleted, he enters Musou Rage, initiating the final phase. Now unstaggarable, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources: activate Musou attacks, deploy Battle Arts, and strike with everything you've got. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Successfully breaking his Fortitude here will allow you to defeat this formidable opponent.
