"Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell - Matt Murdock's Dark Knight Returns"
It's an exhilarating time for Daredevil aficionados. The beloved character is making waves both on screen and in print. On Disney+, the live-action series is set to continue with "Daredevil: Born Again," while Marvel Comics launches a new miniseries, "Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell." This series reunites the creative talents of Charles Soule and Steve McNiven, previously known for their work on "Death of Wolverine." The premise of "Cold Day in Hell" is tantalizingly pitched as Daredevil's own version of "The Dark Knight Returns," promising a unique take on the aging superhero trope.
IGN had the opportunity to delve into this new series through an email interview with Charles Soule. The comparison to "The Dark Knight Returns" is apt, as "Cold Day in Hell" is set in a future where Matt Murdock has lost his powers and is dealing with the ravages of time and the ghosts of his past. Soule explains that in this alternate future, superheroes are a thing of the past. Matt's powers, derived from a radioactive mishap, have faded over time, leaving him as an ordinary older man with a storied history. "He's still got all his combat training, but he hasn't used it for a very long time," Soule notes. This sets the stage for a compelling narrative about an aging hero drawn back into action.
The theme of an aging superhero returning to the fray is not new, but Soule sees it as a powerful way to explore and redefine characters. "For me, the tonal switcheroo you get when you show familiar characters at unfamiliar points in their lives can be a really potent way to define them in new ways for readers," he says. This approach allows for a fresh perspective on Matt Murdock, stripping him down to his core while introducing new elements outside the regular continuity.
Soule and McNiven's collaboration on "Cold Day in Hell" builds on their previous work, including "Death of Wolverine." Soule views each project as an evolution of their partnership. "I think everything we do together is in some ways a companion piece to everything we've done," he reflects. Their collaborative process on this series has been likened to "jazz," emphasizing the dynamic and experimental nature of their work together.
One of the intriguing aspects of stories like "Cold Day in Hell" is seeing how the supporting cast and villains have evolved. While Soule remains tight-lipped about specific details, he promises that readers will encounter some significant surprises regarding Daredevil's allies and adversaries.
With the release of "Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1" coinciding with the buzz around "Born Again," it's clear Marvel is leveraging the momentum of the show. Soule believes the series can serve as an accessible entry point into Daredevil's comic universe, even for those with only a basic understanding of the character's history. "It's designed as a story people can pick up and enjoy if they know the most basic things about Daredevil and his past," he explains.
Speaking of "Born Again," Soule's previous run on Daredevil from 2015-2018 has evidently influenced the series. Elements like Wilson Fisk's mayoral campaign and the villain Muse are drawn directly from his work. Having seen the entire season, Soule is thrilled to see his ideas reach a broader audience. "The thought that these ideas will be reaching that many people... what a wonderful thing," he shares, expressing confidence that fans will appreciate the show.
