The wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of releasing its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting at an imminent announcement—potentially "any day now." This exciting news was shared during a recent interview with Business Insider. While details remain scarce regarding the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe, Willingham confirmed the development team is diligently working on the project.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained, highlighting the game's interactive nature.

Willingham, a prominent Critical Role cast member, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice acting stars Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its inception, Critical Role has expanded into a multifaceted entertainment franchise, with its Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, achieving significant success.

The upcoming video game will join Critical Role's diverse portfolio of projects, though its connection to existing narratives remains undefined. In December 2024, Willingham revealed to Rolling Stone that the team was actively pursuing a video game spinoff, stating they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." Whether the game will adapt a previous campaign or introduce an original story within the Exandria setting remains unknown.

While a late 2024 or early 2025 announcement was initially anticipated, Willingham's recent "any day" comment suggests an imminent reveal. He previously elaborated on the challenges of the interactive entertainment industry to Rolling Stone, stating, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels… There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

A release date for the Critical Role video game is yet to be announced. In the meantime, fans can look forward to updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
