Civilization VII: Top PC Game of 2025 and New Campaign Mechanics

Civilization VII has been crowned the Most Wanted PC Game of 2025 by PC Gamer, a title earned following a vote by a panel of developers, creators, and editors. The announcement was made during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted on December 6th. This accolade highlights the anticipation surrounding the game's release.

The PC Gaming Show, a nearly three-hour livestream, showcased the top 25 most anticipated games of 2025. Other notable titles featured included Doom: The Dark Ages, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Slay the Spire 2. Interestingly, Hollow Knight: Silksong was absent from the list.

Civilization VII launches on February 11th, 2025, across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

Addressing Player Completion Rates: The "Ages" Mechanic

In a PC Gamer interview, Creative Director Ed Beach discussed a key new mechanic designed to improve campaign completion rates. Data from Civilization VI revealed a significant number of players didn't finish campaigns, prompting Firaxis Games to implement changes to reduce micromanagement and restructure the gameplay experience.

The solution is the "Ages" system, dividing campaigns into three distinct eras: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Players can transition between historically and geographically linked civilizations at the end of each Age, mirroring the rise and fall of real-world empires. This allows players to experience multiple civilizations within a single playthrough.

Key features of the Ages system include:

• Historical Connections: Transitions between civilizations are not random, maintaining historical accuracy. For example, the Roman Empire might transition to the French Empire, potentially with the Norman Empire serving as a bridge.
• Persistent Leaders: Leaders remain consistent across Ages, fostering a sense of continuity and rivalry.
• Overbuild Feature: Allows constructing new buildings atop existing ones, but Wonders and some structures remain.

This innovative approach offers players a fresh perspective on managing cultural, military, diplomatic, and economic aspects while maintaining a connection to their chosen leader, significantly enhancing replayability and addressing the completion rate issue.
