She described the film's concept as "a really cool idea," a "30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world." This aligns with Simon Kinberg's 2018 comments to IGN, where he described the intended tone as a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," fitting Gambit's character as a "hustler and a womanizer."

Caplan confirmed her involvement, stating that she had signed on for the film and even held meetings with Tatum before production was set to begin. The project, however, was ultimately scrapped following the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum reportedly "traumatized" by the experience. His subsequent surprise cameo as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine offered a brief, albeit unexpected, return to the character.

The cancellation is a significant setback, considering the extensive development and reported start date. While Marvel Studios remains tight-lipped on Gambit's future, the impending introduction of the X-Men into the MCU leaves room for speculation. Last August, Ryan Reynolds' tweet of a high-quality Deadpool & Wolverine scene further fueled fan theories about Gambit's potential future.
