Bungie's Marathon hints at imminent reveal.
Remember Marathon? Destiny creator Bungie is finally preparing to showcase more of this long-awaited project.
This PvP-centric extraction shooter transports players to the enigmatic world of Tau Ceti IV. Participants control Runners - cyber-enhanced mercenries biologically engineered to endure the planet's extreme conditions while scavenging the remnants of its lost colony.
Information about Marathon has been scarce since Bungie's October development update video, which revealed mechanics while emphasizing its early development stage. At that time, player models were still being finalized and enemy designs remained in preliminary phases.
Six months later, Bungie appears ready to unveil its progress. The official Marathon account recently tweeted a cryptic image with distorted signal noise. Sharp-eyed fans spotted ASCII art referencing the original Marathon trailer - classic Bungie intrigue that has already sparked intense fan speculation.

Initially revealed in May 2023 as a reimagining of Bungie's classic franchise, Marathon maintains the original's signature themes of unsettling mystery and psychological tension. However, Bungie has faced significant challenges recently, including laying off 220 employees (17% of staff) in July 2024 - a controversial decision that drew industry criticism.
This followed an earlier round of 100 layoffs, after which employees described the studio atmosphere as "soul crushing". More turmoil emerged when reports alleged former Marathon director Chris Barrett was terminated following misconduct investigations, leading to Barrett's $200 million lawsuit against Sony and Bungie.
Answer See ResultsThese developments coincide with Sony reassessing its live-service strategy. President Hiroki Totoki announced in November 2023 that only six of twelve planned live-service titles would launch by March 2026, leading to the cancellation of The Last of Us multiplayer.
While Helldivers 2 became PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game (12 million units in 12 weeks), Sony's other live-service ventures faltered. Concord proved particularly disastrous - active for barely two weeks before shutdown due to critically low player counts, with its developer subsequently shuttered.
Earlier this year, Sony reportedly axed two unannounced live-service games: a God of War project at Bluepoint and another title from Days Gone developer Bend Studio.
